Health Balanced Scorecard

Dr. rer. nat. Doris Schuster was an external doctoral student in the Research Group for Industrial and Engineering Psychology (FAI) from October 1, 2012 to July 11, 2019. On July 11, 2019, she successfully defended her dissertation entitled “Healthier work in rotating shift service of the police using the example of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate – What is the influence of individual potentials and stress factors? A scorecard-based evaluation to create a picture of health.” („Gesünderes Arbeiten im Wechselschichtdienst der Polizei am Beispiel des Landes Rheinland-Pfalz – Welchen Einfluss haben individuelle Potentiale und Belastungsfaktoren? Eine scorecard-basierte Evaluation zur Erstellung eines Gesundheitsbildes.“)

Members of the board of examiners were Prof. Dr. Petra Grell ( chairwoman), Prof. Dr. Joachim Vogt ( examiner), Prof. Dr. habil. Yvonne Ferreira, (co-examiner), Vertr.-Prof. Dr. Christian Müller, and Prof. Wolfgang Ellermeier, PhD (assessor 2).

Optimising Performance, Health and Safety in High Altitude Observatories

Psychological and behavioural peculiarities of working at high altitudes were investigated. Shift work, travelling overseas, potential hazards, and oxygen problems also characterized the project. The aim was to draw the employees’ attention to these health dangers and propose counter measures like, for example, forward-rotating short shift cycles, trainings for oxygen and mountain climbing by car (bad, winding roads up the Atacama Desert at 5.000 meters altitude).

Duration: until 2004

In the past, FAI was responsible for modules in Clinical Psychology and also had some research projects in this area. With the departure of Madeleine Müller (née Simon), Katja Lange, Judith Kramwinkel, and Ines Passier to their current clinics or practices, FAI has discontinued clinical teaching and research.

The following projects in the clinical area were previously successfully completed:

Evaluation of the introduction of integrated care according to §140b SGB V – accompanying research for a pilot project of Vitos gGmbH and Barmer Gmünder Ersatzkasse GEK (Evaluation der Einführung einer integrierten Versorgung nach §140b SGB V – Begleitforschung für ein Pilotprojekt der Vitos gGmbH und Barmer Gmünder Ersatzkasse GEK)

In general, the concept of integrated care describes a relatively new form of care promoted by the legislature and regulated within the framework of Section 140 of the German Social Code, Book V (SGB V). This statutory regulation makes it possible for health insurance funds to conclude „[…] Verträge über eine verschiedene Leistungssektoren übergreifende Versorgung der Versicherten oder eine interdisziplinär-fachübergreifende Versorgung […]“([…] contracts on care for the insured that spans various service sectors or on interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary care […]) with certain service providers, e.g., licensed physicians and hospital providers (SGB V, § 140a, b). The essential goal of implementing integrated care concepts is to achieve improved networking between sectors (e.g., specialists and hospitals) and/or different disciplines. This is intended to improve the quality of patient care and at the same time reduce health care costs by means of improved control of treatment processes.

Cooperation project: Health balanced scorecard

In times of demographic change, a shortage of skilled workers, rising patient numbers, and increasing psychological stress on healthcare workers, Vitos gGmbH has perceived an acute need for action to maintain and promote the health of its employees. In addition to corporate management with the management tool of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC), health management is to be integrated into corporate processes through the “Health BSC”.

FIGA Early mental health intervention – a sequential work ability approach (Frühzeitige Intervention psychische Gesundheit – ein sequentielles Arbeitsfähigkeitskonzept)

The “FIGA” concept addresses the currently existing supply bottleneck in early intervention for mental illnesses according to the concept of so-called “early intervention”. A concept was developed that enables Merck BKK to offer its customers participation in a well-founded program with the aim of rapid, comprehensive intervention and thus to strive to regain the ability to work. FAI's task was to develop the above-mentioned concept in a science-based manner, taking into account the special needs of BKK Merck and Akzo Nobel. The scientific know-how of the TU Darmstadt and the extensive network of the Caritasverband Darmstadt e.V. played a key role in this process.

Age- and usage-differentiated personnel management – Feasibility of a constructive approach to absenteeism, presenteeism, and usage restrictions (Alters- und verwendungsdifferenziertes Personalmanagement – Machbarkeit eines konstruktiven Umgangs mit Absentismus, Präsentismus und Verwendungseinschränkungen)

Restrictions on the use of civil servants are a growing problem in the police force. Absenteeism, presenteeism, inadequate reintegration of workers after long-term absences, and restrictions on their use limit the performance of the police service.

Therefore, guide-based interviews were conducted with heads of service and considered under three objectives:

1. to improve the process by which a use restriction is imposed.

2. to improve the communication and transparency of the process.

3. to explore the possibilities of deployment of the police enforcement officers who have been restricted in their use.

The results indicate that use restrictions have so far only been managed and approaches to primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention are lacking. An appeal is made for a “management of use restrictions” in which “use appropriate to suffering” is also ensured with interdepartmental measures.
