The aim of this research project MoPPa (Modeling of the Privacy Paradox) was to identify reasons of different groups of people for using (or ignoring) protective measures or following recommendations and to relate them to each other. The Privacy Paradox, which describes the discrepancy between will and action, is to be better explored and understood in the context of self-data protection. The focus here is to use informational and psychological theories and methods to identify measures that increase privacy awareness and motivation for self-data protection in the population.
First, already identified explanations of the Privacy Paradox will be elaborated and complemented by current data from interviews and focus groups with users. The results will be used to derive so-called mental models of self-data protection, on the basis of which intervention options will subsequently be designed and evaluated. The findings in this project will be shared with other BMBF-funded projects in several workshops to provide a well-founded empirical psychological basis for their work.
